Workshop overview

Creating a culturally safe environment for First Nations peoples in aged care means understanding the importance of cultural identity, framing questions respectfully and recording information with sensitivity and consent. It is a best practice approach that will also support your organisation in meeting the new strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards (February 2025).

This workshop will prepare participants to engage with First Nations peoples in a way that respects their cultural identity and provides a safe space for having sensitive conversations.

Who should attend?

Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) and Home Care Package (HCP) providers, including team leaders, assessment, case managers, care coordinators, allied health practitioners and quality and compliance staff.

The outcomes are:

  • preparedness for your organisation to meet the new strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards (February 2025)
  • enhanced understanding of the requirement for Standard 1 – The Person, 1.1.2 C
  • awareness of the importance of connection to cultural identity
  • greater understanding of cultural considerations that ensure engagement and communication with Aboriginal Elders is genuine and respectful
  • understanding of why some Elders may not want to answer certain questions and how to show respect for their decision
  • tools to explain what the information you collect is for, and how it will be used.

Who is facilitating?
