About the project
The Continuum of Ageing 2050 is a bold initiative to reimagine ageing and aged care in Australia.
It sets out a future-ready approach where older Australians are supported to age well, with access to the right services, housing and connections – enabling choice, adaptability and empowerment.
Why it matters
By 2056, nearly 9 million Australians will be aged 65+.
Our ageing system must be at the forefront – how will it adapt across care, health, housing and community life?
Australia’s ageing population is growing faster than ever, yet current systems are struggling to keep pace. As demand increases, the cracks are already visible:
- Housing shortages for older Australians are already acute and will intensify as demand outstrips supply.
- Providers face financial pressures from rising costs of capital and workforce shortages.
- Broader economic trends – slower productivity growth, intergenerational fiscal pressures and rising health costs add further challenges.
The Continuum of Ageing 2050 project recognises that housing, health, aged care and community support cannot be treated in isolation.
A positive future for ageing depends on integrated systems that bring together housing, care, health and community supports.
These systems must also strengthen provider resilience and capacity to meet future demand, as well as enabling older Australians to live well at every stage of later life.
